VOICES OF CHANGE

Arts-based civic learning that connects communities and empowers student voice

What is Voices of Change (VOC)?

VOC is a full-day, in-school field trip that brings together students from two neighboring schools that are often isolated from one another and shaped by different cultural, economic, and lived experiences.

Through the arts, students define their voices to actively create change. They build empathy, develop agency, and recognize shared hopes for the future, even as paths forward may differ based on background, identity, ability, and lived experience.

With a curriculum that evolves each year, VOC remains topical, relevant, and engaging for today’s high school students.

The Student Experience

Students engage in interactive workshops led by two professional teaching artists from different cultural backgrounds.
Through theater, movement, storytelling, and dialogue, they:
  • Explore identity and lived experience
  • Examine assumptions and perceptions of the “other”
  • Collaborate across difference
  • Create original, socially conscious performance work grounded in equity, compassion, and understanding
The day culminates in a work-in-progress performance, with opportunities for further development and presentation at the Stage the Change Conference.

Program Objectives

  • Build empathy, acceptance, and mutual respect across diverse identities and experiences
  • Encourage civic engagement and global citizenship
  • Empower students to use their artistic voices for social change through artivism and original performance work
  • Foster collaboration and support student agency through creative expression
VOC offers arts-based civic learning that supports your Theatre, English, Social Studies, and Participation in Government curricula!
