Stories That Connect People and Heal

Great plays rarely begin with agreement. They begin with people who cannot see eye to eye. Our job as playwrights is to create characters honest enough to argue, vulnerable enough to listen, and human enough to change.

Participants will write a short dramatic scene exploring division, disagreement, or misunderstanding and discover how conflict can become an opportunity for transformation. By creating characters with opposing perspectives, they will explore how theater can bridge divides, not by erasing differences, but by fostering understanding, empathy, and the possibility of coming together to create change.

Carmen Rivera is a New York-born, Puerto Rican playwright and screenwriter. Her play, La Gringa, part of the OBIE Award Winning Series, New Voices, premiered in 1996 and is now the second longest-running play in Off-Broadway history, after The Fantasticks. Both English and Spanish versions are available at Concord Theatricals. La Caída De Rafael Trujillo (The Downfall of Rafael Trujillo) received an ATI Award for Best Production.
