From Story to Screen:
Turning Personal Stories into Visual Narratives

Working in small groups with simple materials and smartphones, participants will explore how personal stories can move between writing, image, film and performance. Beginning with short writing and storytelling exercises, they’ll draw from everyday experiences and moments of connection or misunderstanding, then experiment with translating those stories through metaphor, movement and imagery. Participants will also learn basic filmmaking techniques and accessible editing tools to help shape and package their ideas into short films or stop-motion pieces. The session will conclude with a screening and reflection on how different creative forms can help us share experiences and connect across differences.

Mariam R. Paracha is a Pakistani American multidisciplinary artist, writer, filmmaker and creative educator whose work spans storytelling, performance, animation and community arts. She is the founder of Spoken Stage and was a co-founder and Art Director at Mano Animation Studios, where she worked on Pakistan’s first hand-drawn animated feature, The Glassworker. She received a filmmaking fellowship to co-direct the short documentary The Dance of Resistance: Women, Theatre & Activism in Pakistan, currently screening at film festivals. Her practice brings together writing, visual storytelling and participatory arts to create spaces for people to experiment, express themselves and tell their own stories. www.mariamparacha.com
